There is something about fall that makes getting dressed fun again.
After months of throwing on the lightest thing possible and trying not to melt, suddenly we get texture again. Denim. Suede. Jackets. Loafers. Big bags. Sunglasses that somehow look even better with a sweater and a cup of coffee in your hand.
And while I love looking at fall trends, I’m much more interested in pieces I can actually wear.
I don't want to completely reinvent my wardrobe every September. I want a handful of things that make the clothes I already own feel current again. Give me a good pair of jeans, a beautiful brown shoe, an easy jacket and a few accessories, and I'm happy.
So these are the ten pieces on my fall fashion favorites list this year. Most are simple enough to wear for several seasons, but they still capture that cozy, polished fall feeling.
1. Brown Suede Loafers
If I bought only one shoe for fall, it would probably be a brown suede loafer.
There is something about suede that immediately makes an outfit look autumnal. And loafers occupy that wonderful middle ground between dressed-up and casual. They're polished without requiring a heel and work just as easily with jeans as they do with trousers or a midi skirt.
My favorite combination is ridiculously simple: straight-leg jeans, a white or cream T-shirt, brown suede loafers and a jacket. These QIY loafers on Amazon are comfy and amazing!
Look for a soft chocolate, cognac or taupe rather than something overly trendy. Those colors work beautifully with blue denim, black, cream, olive and burgundy.
2. Dark-Wash Straight-Leg Jeans
Every fall wardrobe needs the jeans.
You know the pair—the ones you automatically reach for when you have approximately three minutes to get dressed.
This season, I especially love darker denim. A clean indigo wash looks slightly more polished than heavily distressed or faded jeans while still feeling completely casual. These jeans from Amazon are perfect!
I also prefer a straight or relaxed leg because it works with almost every fall shoe: loafers, ballet flats, sneakers and ankle boots.
If you already have lighter summer denim, adding one darker pair is an easy way to make your wardrobe feel ready for cooler weather without buying a pile of new clothes.
Levi's is always one of the first places I look for classic denim, particularly its Ribcage and 501 styles.

3. A Suede or Faux-Suede Jacket
Apparently I am not finished with suede.
But if there is one material that belongs to fall, this is it.
A brown suede jacket gives you all the richness of leather while feeling a little softer and less edgy. Throw one over jeans and a basic tee and suddenly the outfit looks intentional.
I particularly like slightly boxy or cropped versions because they balance beautifully with high-waisted jeans. If genuine suede isn't in your budget—or you simply prefer not to wear it—there are plenty of faux-suede options that create a similar effect. You’ll LOVE this one at Amazon.
Camel, tobacco and chocolate brown are my favorite shades because they're incredibly easy to mix into an existing neutral wardrobe.

4. An Oversized Chocolate-Brown Bag
For years, I carried mostly black bags. But chocolate brown in fall? Completely different story.
A roomy brown shoulder bag or tote adds warmth to even the simplest outfit. It looks gorgeous against cream knits, denim, black coats and camel jackets. THIS Madewell bag is way too expensive for me. Although it’s gorgeous!
Here’s a more affordable yet stylish version on Amazon.
And I actually want my everyday bag to hold things. Tiny bags are adorable until you need sunglasses, a wallet, keys, a charger, lip balm and all the other mysterious objects that somehow follow us around.
Look for a soft, slouchy silhouette in brown leather, faux leather or suede. It's practical while still giving an outfit that relaxed, expensive-looking finish.

5. Retro Tortoiseshell Sunglasses
Sunglasses aren't just for summer.
In fact, I think they look particularly chic in fall when they're paired with heavier fabrics and richer colors.
Instead of basic black frames, I'm loving tortoiseshell and warm brown this season. They soften an outfit and look beautiful with all the chocolate, camel and burgundy shades that tend to appear in autumn. I LOVE these ones on Amazon.
The truth is, you don't need anything wildly dramatic. A slightly oversized oval, rectangular or classic Wayfarer-inspired frame is enough to update your look.
And this is one of the easiest fall accessories to find affordably.

6. A Cream Cable-Knit Sweater
There are trendy fall pieces, and then there are things you'll probably still be wearing ten years from now. A cream sweater belongs in the second category.
I love a slightly relaxed cable-knit sweater because it gives an outfit texture without requiring much styling. Wear it with dark jeans and loafers. Tuck it loosely into trousers. Layer it over a button-down. Throw it over your shoulders when the afternoon is warm but you know the temperature will drop later.
This cream cable knit if perfect!
Cream also works beautifully with virtually every fall color—brown, burgundy, navy, olive, charcoal and denim.

7. A Classic Trench Coat
If your fall weather is unpredictable, the trench coat earns its place in the closet.
It gives you a layer without the heaviness of a winter coat, and almost everything underneath it suddenly looks more polished.
Jeans and sneakers? Add a trench.
Black leggings and a sweater? Add a trench.
Trousers and loafers? Definitely add a trench.
I prefer a slightly oversized trench that hits somewhere around the knee or below it rather than a very fitted version. It feels more modern and leaves enough room underneath for sweaters as temperatures drop. This one from Amazon is perfect!
Classic khaki is difficult to beat, although olive and chocolate brown are gorgeous alternatives.

8. Burgundy Ballet Flats
If brown is fall's neutral, burgundy is the color I want to sneak in everywhere else.
A burgundy ballet flat is particularly easy because it provides color without dominating your outfit. This pair from Amazon is amazing!
Think dark jeans, a white shirt, burgundy flats and a brown bag. Simple—but much more interesting than automatically reaching for black shoes.
Look for a deeper wine or oxblood shade if you want something sophisticated and versatile. Mary Jane versions are also lovely if you prefer a slightly more feminine, vintage-inspired look.

9. A Striped Knit
Yes, I know. Stripes aren't exactly revolutionary.
That's precisely why I love them.
A cream-and-black or cream-and-navy striped sweater gives you just enough pattern to keep jeans from feeling boring, while remaining neutral enough to wear repeatedly.
This is the sort of piece that works particularly well in a smaller wardrobe because it doesn't require you to think about the rest of the outfit. Add denim, loafers and a bag and you're done.
This striped knit is absolutely adorable!
For fall, I like a relaxed crewneck or slightly oversized knit rather than something extremely fitted.

10. Brown Ankle Boots
Finally, the fall shoe that never really leaves: a great pair of ankle boots.
This year I'd choose brown over black, particularly if your wardrobe contains lots of cream, denim, olive and other warm neutrals.
A simple ankle boot with a low block heel can take you almost anywhere. Wear it under straight jeans, with wide-leg denim, or with dresses and tights when the weather gets cooler.
Avoid too many embellishments if you're looking for longevity. A clean toe, comfortable heel and rich brown finish will survive far more trend cycles than something extremely distinctive. This is a great pair I found on Amazon.

The Fall Wardrobe Formula
The best thing about these ten pieces is that they aren't ten separate outfits.
They all work together.
Take the dark jeans and wear them with the suede loafers, cream sweater and brown bag. The next day, swap the sweater for a striped knit and add the suede jacket. Wear the same jeans with burgundy flats and a trench coat. Put the ankle boots underneath them when temperatures drop.
That's how I want to shop for fall now.
Not by chasing twenty micro-trends that will feel tired before I've had a chance to wear them, but by finding a few beautiful pieces that make getting dressed easier.
And perhaps that's why fall fashion is so satisfying in the first place. The clothes don't have to shout. The textures do most of the work: soft suede, substantial denim, chunky knits, polished leather.
Give me those, a great pair of sunglasses and a giant bag that actually holds everything, and I'm ready for fall.
